[ED-TECH] My Learning Log

Ed-Tech Mailing list members,

I saw something on the web where someone was using a mind mapping tool
to keep track of what he had learned that week. I decided to try it out.
I have attached my document from last week, to show you what it looks
like. It is a pdf file, but each little "world" icon is actually a link
to the original source for that specific item.

Please share with me any suggestions for ways I could make it more
valuable (without too much more effort), or ideas for how you might add
something like this to your students' learning activities.

I use an app on the iPad called iThoughtsHD to create the mind map, then
I save it as a pdf file for distribution. There are LOTS of other mind
mapping software that could be used including FreeMind, a free program
for computers written in Java. That means it will run on any operating
system, as long as the Java runtime has been installed. Find out more
about this free program at http://freemind.sourceforge.net/.

[ED-TECH] Seven Futures for Higher Education - webinar Fri @ 2:00 pm - could be good

Most people accept that higher education will be changing, since change is the one constant in all things and since the pressures and opportunities are coming at us like a tsunami.

This Friday John Sener presents his thoughts on the future of higher education from the perspectives of author and parent; of observation, theory, and immersion.  Sener is the author of the book by the same title as the webinar, about the influence of technology on the future of higher education AND  the parent of a son who is now half-way through his freshman year of college.

[ED-TECH] Teaching, Learning, and Technology Group - Free membership

Ed-Tech list members,

For access to some excellent material on teaching and learning, get a free Individual Membership in the tltgroup.org site. Go to http://tltgroup.roundtablelive.org/Individual and select "Individual Membership from a Subscribing Institution." Follow the screens and enter "University of Miami" for the "Organization" on the application form.

Once your account has been created, you can sign in and get access to Resources, Members Only Archives, FridayLive! Archives and more.

If you use PowerPoint in your classes, you MUST, in my opinion, view the TLTGroup's FridayLIVE presentation on "Rethinking the Design of Presentation Slides. It argues, with evidence to back it up, for a different way of constructing your lecture slides. Very convincing, to me.

[ED-TECH] Raspberry Pi web cast

Techies of UM,

Have you heard of the $35 Raspberry Pi computer? Go to http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs for the faq about this hacker (in the good sense) computer. It is tiny, runs Linux, and seems to be created for people who want to mess with the machine, not just run programs.

Want to learn more?  Watch the o'reilly web cast on Wednesday, January 23, at 1:00 PM ET. You can sign up at the O'Reilly web site.

Want to order one right now? Go to the RS-Online web site.

DO YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE?  Let me know so I can find out more!
