[ED-TECH] Apply now for the 2014 Faculty Learning Community

If you are interested in exploring how you can use technology to improve student learning in your classes, apply for the 2014 faculty learning community (FLC) at UM. You will explore Information and Communication Technology and then make some design changes in your courses based on what you have, personally, learned. For that you get money, release time, and (best of all) a chance to reflect on and improve teaching and learning with a group of your fellow faculty members.

The application and complete details can be found at http://tinyurl.com/flc2014

The application is extremely short, so fill it out now. It is due by December 7th, but DON'T WAIT. This is a valuable opportunity that I encourage you to take. You can see the list of FLC Fellows, 2009-2013, on the http://scholar.library.miami.edu/flc/ web site. Talk to one of them and see if this is something that you would like to be part of.

[ED-TECH] Bookstore sale on Thursday, especially technology, especially Apple

I was in the bookstore this morning and the manager mentioned that they are having a HUGE sale on Thursday. Mainly technology but lots of other stuff, too, I guess. Apple products are almost never discounted beyond the $100 educational discount, but they will have additional reductions on Thursday. Thought I should share the info, in case anyone can take advantage of it.

[ED-TECH] Student created videos?

Ed-Tech list members,

I am looking for people whose students create videos as part of their classwork. I am using "video" very loosely: anything that is delivered in a video file format, whether filmed with a camera or not.  If your students create videos as part of their classwork please let me know so I can talk with you.

[ED-TECH] New: NMC Horizon Report 2013 Higher Education Edition

Hi everyone,

The new Horizon Report has been released.  You can download it from the link below.

http://www.nmc.org/publications/2013-horizon-report-higher-ed

If you are not familiar with NMC, they are an organization that works with various educational institutions and museums to identify and promote innovative ways to use technology for teaching and learning.

Each year, there is a collaboration between NMC and the Educause Learning Initiative; they take a look at emerging technologies and vote on how and when they will effect different institutions: K-12, Higher Education, and Museums. These discussions lead to the publication of the Horizon Reports.

The Horizon Reports are very interesting – they include links to institutions and/or companies that are already working on the emerging technology highlighted in the report.

For example:

·         A MOOC (Massively Open Online Courses) called “Landmarks in Physics” delivered through Udacity was created by an MIT graduate who filmed in Italy, the Netherlands, and England to create a virtual tour that explains the basic concepts of physics at the sites of important discoveries in our history: http://go.nmc.org/phy.

·         In a pilot program at Yale University’s Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, instructors are sharing images from their digital microscopes with students’ iPads through a mobile app. By connecting microscope with tablet, students are able to annotate images and capture them for future use: http://go.nmc.org/yavis.

·         Harvard University’s Semitic Museum is using 3D printing technology to restore a damaged ancient artifact from their collection. By 3D scanning existing fragments of the Egyptian lion’s legs, researchers are able to create computer models that will be used to print a scale foam replica of the complete sculpture, though it initially was missing its body and head: http://go.nmc.org/semit.

I encourage you to check out the report. There are some amazing things created by mixing technology and education.

[ED-TECH] My Learning Log

Ed-Tech Mailing list members,

I saw something on the web where someone was using a mind mapping tool
to keep track of what he had learned that week. I decided to try it out.
I have attached my document from last week, to show you what it looks
like. It is a pdf file, but each little "world" icon is actually a link
to the original source for that specific item.

Please share with me any suggestions for ways I could make it more
valuable (without too much more effort), or ideas for how you might add
something like this to your students' learning activities.

I use an app on the iPad called iThoughtsHD to create the mind map, then
I save it as a pdf file for distribution. There are LOTS of other mind
mapping software that could be used including FreeMind, a free program
for computers written in Java. That means it will run on any operating
system, as long as the Java runtime has been installed. Find out more
about this free program at http://freemind.sourceforge.net/.
