Ed-Tech mailing list members,
Are you interested in learning more about Podcasting and some of the things happening with Podcasting here at UM? Come to the "Podcasting 101" workshop on Thursday, March 30, and see John Allen, Apple Computer, demonstrate the complete process of creating, publishing, accessing, and listening to a podcast. Here about iTunes U, a place for "Coursecasts" to be stored and accessed. Stay after the session to further discuss related issues.
There will be two sessions, one at 11:00 AM and one at 2:00 PM. To sign up, go to the http://www.snurl.com/podcasting101 web page. Here is the blurb on the IAC's Lunch and Learn Series page.

Do you know what Podcasting is? If not, come to this workshop and find out. If so, come and learn what plans are being made to support Coursecasting (recording and distributing recordings of course sessions) at UM. John Allen, Apple Computer, Inc., will demonstrate the entire process of creating, posting, subscribing to, and listening to a voice recording. The session will last 75 minutes (one period) with lots of time for Q&A if you can stay longer. The same presentation will be presented in the morning and in the afternoon. This workshop is designed for faculty who are interested in learning about the Podcasting process, but it is open to anyone at UM who would like to know more about this exciting method of communication.

[ED-TECH] Lunch and Learn: Creating On-Screen and On-Line Demonstrations: Teaching with a Tablet PC

Ed-Tech list members,
Do you work out problems during class? Whether you currently use the board, an overhead projector, or a document camera, come and see how a Tablet PC can be used as a projected writing surface and how the entire process can be captured for later viewing by the students. Below is the complete description of the Lunch and Learn session where I will demonstrate the teaching features of a Tablet PC. After using one for three years now, I wouldn't want to have anything else. Attend this session Wednesday, April 5, 2006, 12:20 PM - 1:10 PM, Whitten University Center, Room 226 A/B (Flamingo Ballroom), to learn why. Lunch will be served. Registration is required, and limited. Use the On-Line Registration Form to register.

Creating On-Screen and On-Line Demonstrations: Teaching with a Tablet PC

William R. Vilberg
Instructional Advancement

How can we help students learn technical processes that require symbolic manipulation? For example, how can we help statistics students solve problems, music students arrange harmonies, English students rewrite paragraphs, and chemistry students balance equations?

One learning tool that we can provide is a step-by-step sample solution that the students can watch and listen to repeatedly. Such samples can easily be created using a Tablet PC and software such as Camtasia. The Tablet PC allows the instructor to write on the screen, just like on a piece of paper. The Camtasia software captures everything on the screen and everything the instructor says. The instructor works the problem while explaining what steps are being taken and why they are being taken, saves the recording, and makes it available on the Web for students to review as needed.

The same process can be used to capture entire lectures. Rather than working problems on the board, overhead, or document camera, work the problems on the Tablet PC. Everything can be shown in real time on a projector and also captured and made available for later viewing by the students so they can understand exactly what you did, how you did it, and how you explained it.

This presentation will demonstrate how the Tablet PC can support your teaching and help achieve student learning outcomes.

[ED-TECH] Digital Library reception/lecture - Thur, March 16, 6:00 PM

Ed-Tech members,
Robin Bachin's project with the Richter Library will be presented on Thursday, March 16, at 6:00 PM. Our Digital Library has a number of incredible projects that have been developed here at UM. Go to http://digital.library.miami.edu and click on "Projects" on the right to look at the collection. If you do this, have a block of time available. These are extremely engrossing and you will want to explore each of them.
Some are classroom based activities, such as "Voices of Andrew," done with Gene Provenzo's students. Some are research based. Some, such as Robin's, are recipients of the 2004 Digital Library Fellowship. I encourage you to attend this reception and lecture to hear about Robin's project.
I have included the notice from e-Veritas below. A longer announcement of Thursday's event can be found at http://www.library.miami.edu/richternews/RobinBachin.html
