[ED-TECH] Roadshow Travel Alarm - Fun Friday Videos 010

I just found a GREAT presentation timer. It is on sale for $20, normally $30. I created a video on it, even before I have received it. I intend on using it to keep my recordings, presentations, and even meetings on time. Take a look at http://funfridayvideos.com for a 4 and a half minute video discussing some of the features. If you might have a use for this, check it out now, before the sale runs out.

[ED-TECH] Celebrate

Ed-Tech list members,

We had a celebration in our family yesterday when my son, John, had his board of review and officially achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. This was a major achievement that began in first grade as a Tiger Cub and has continued for 11 years, culminating in a major service project at the Environmental Center at Miami Dade College this year. But in reality, yesterday was just another day in his life. The learning and growth were gradual. The people who helped him were many. The effort was slow and continuous. Yesterday he was examined and awarded this highest rank, but there was no big change at any point in the process.

This is just like our students at UM. They enter. You work with them. They grow and learn. They graduate. Many of them don't even realize how much they have changed during their time with us because the change is so gradual. They celebrate commencement and they think it is over, not realizing that growth and learning and change are the one constant they will experience as long as they live.

John will be entering UM in Fall 2011, if all goes as planned. I hope that each of you will have the opportunity to guide him on his journey the same way you guide all of your students. You are what makes an education at UM great. You may not get the recognition you deserve, you all may do it in different ways, but you are the ones that work with our students on a daily basis, encouraging, helping, coaching, and guiding them on their journey. As I celebrate all those who have helped my son become what he is today, I celebrate with all of you the honors that your students achieve every day as they live their informed and educated lives.

What you do is worth doing. I thank you for it.

[ED-TECH] ARTstor and Shared Shelf Information Meeting - Friday at 3:00 pm

Ed-Tech list members,

If you use a lot of visual images in your teaching, you might want to attend the ARTstor meeting on Friday, March 26, 3:00 pm, 3rd floor conference room, Richter LIbrary. This is a chance to talk directly with the President of ARTstor. ARTstor is a digital library of images as well as space to organize your personal images. UM libraries subscribes to ARTstor and has been working on making the service more valuable to faculty who use visual images. Art History and Architecture make major use of the service. Many people in other disciplines might be able to make use of it, too. See the invitation, below, from Yolanda Cooper, Deputy University Librarian, about this event.

NOTE: This will NOT be a training session on ARTstor or what it does. This is a chance to discuss your use of visual resources in teaching, so that the new "Shared Shelf" service can be designed to meet your needs. If you want to get a feel for ARTstor before the meeting, or if you cannot attend, go to http://www.libguides.miami.edu/ARTstor for some wonderful training pages about ARTstor. To access ARTstor from UM you can go to the http://bit.ly/artstor web address. ARTstore also has some videos on the http://youtube.com/artstor web page.

Subject: ARTstor and Shared Shelf Information Meeting

Colleagues,

Over the past year, the Libraries have partnered with ARTstor, eight institutions, and the Society of Architectural Historians to develop "Shared Shelf", a tool to facilitate the management and sharing of digital images. The institutional partners include Colby College, Middlebury College, Cornell University, Harvard University, New York University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Yale.

A beta version of Shared Shelf will be available for use this summer. I write you today to invite you to a meeting to discuss the use of ARTstor's hosting program for teaching and the future migration to Shared Shelf. James Shulman, President of ARTstor, will visit the University of Miami campus on March 26th, 2010 specifically to meet with all interested faculty and discuss their use of ARTstor and visual resources in teaching. The discussion is timely and essential as we work to develop the best possible product to meet the needs of our faculty.

The meeting is scheduled for this Friday, March 26th at 3 p.m., in the 3rd floor conference room of the Otto G. Richter Library. We hope you can join us for this discussion.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me at ycooper@miami.edu<mailto:ycooper@miami.edu> or 284-1728. If you would like more information about Shared Shelf visit http://artstor.org/news/n-html/an-090714-shelf.shtml.

Best,
Yolanda

[ED-TECH] Clickers in the classroom

I encourage everyone to learn about the use of clickers in the classroom. When the students have clickers, you can "poll the audience" just like they do on "Who wants to be a millionaire." People with large classes or people who tend to lecture a lot should be sure to consider using clickers to increase student engagement, gather formative assessment data, and adjust their teaching to the needs of their students. Almost any class can benefit from the appropriate use of clickers. Please consider using them in your courses this Fall. Since the University has standardized on the i>clicker product, the students only buy one clicker for use in all their classes. There is no cost to you, the instructor, since the IAC provides your Instructor clicker and the base unit that collects the results.

On Tuesday, March 23 (this coming Tuesday) we have scheduled information/training sessions so that you can have time to consider using these for your courses next Fall. If you are free, please consider signing up now.

Go to http://www.miami.edu/iac and click on the "Events" link to register for any of these sessions.

TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010

UNIVERSITY CENTER, FLAMINGO BALLROOM A (Room 226 A)

"Why use clickers in the classroom?"
9:45 am -10:45 am repeated at 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm

"How to use the i>clicker software"
11:00 am - 12:00 am repeated at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Food will be served at the 11:00 am session and the 12:45 pm session.

[ED-TECH] fav4.org - Fun Friday Video 008

The weather here is so beautiful I can't believe it. I have been walking around the lake each day, just to get some time outside on this wonderful campus. With the students gone, it lacks the vitality that it usually contains, but the tranquility is amazing. I hope everyone is having as wonder filled a spring break as I am.

Last week's Fun Friday Video is an eight minute demonstration of fav4.org<http://fav4.org>. This web site allows you to create a simple home page that contain four links to your favorite web sites. It really is lovely. I used to have my home page go to Google News, but that was like turning on a radio and a TV at one time, with tons of links and things to distract me. Now I have four links that I can review if I want to. Very nice.

Go to http://funfridayvideos.com to watch the fav4.org<http://fav4.org> video.
