[ED-TECH] Gathering pictures at McDonalds...

Ed-Tech list members,

Every day I drive my son to high school and then go to McDonalds with my daughter. She has breakfast and we wait until time to take her to her bus stop for middle school. Today I needed to grab some pictures from the Web for a demonstration activity I am going to do with the i>clickers at Fun Friday. (Sign up now, if you can make it today at 12:20 pm, in the Learning Center, Room 170. Go to http://www.miami.edu/iac and click on the "Events" menu item.)

I have an application on my iPhone that lets my computer connect to the Internet through the iPhone. This is called "tethering" and we say that the computer is tethered to the telephone. The iPhone was using its normal cellular signal, so I could have done this from anywhere. It isn't an "official" application for the iPhone, and I had to "jailbreak" my phone to install it, but it gives me such tremendous capabilities I just had to try it out. Now that I have, I will use it a lot.

Anywhere I can get a data signal on my cell phone, I can now use my computer to reach the Internet. I can let more than one computer use it, if I want. So, my family could be driving down the highway, with everyone but the driver accessing the Internet using the wireless Internet access provided by my phone. Or a group of people could get together somewhere and all connect to the Internet to work together. Speed was great for one computer. It would degrade as more are added.

It is always fun to try something new, especially when it works. But it is really exciting to try something new and realize that this changes the size and shape of the box (you know, work outside the box) or exposes a new paradigm.

Ed-Tech list members,

This Friday, December 5th, the last day of classes, there will be a Fun Friday event and a Blackboard's Grade Center training session. I know how busy everyone is at the end of the semester, but you might find these sessions worthy of your limited time.

Fun Friday, 12:20 pm - 1:10 pm, Learning Center, Room 170 - Fun Friday is an informal demonstration of interesting web sites, hardware, and software. Take a break from your busy day and enjoy lunch with technology. This week we expect to demonstrate the i>clicker system, Elluminate vrooms, and Boxee. Don't know what they are? Here is your chance to find out. And lunch is on us! Register by going to http://www.miami.edu/iac and clicking on the "Events" menu item. [ED-TECH] Registration process

Ed-Tech list members,

To register for the "i>clicker" training, or any other IAC training, please go to http://www.miami.edu/iac and click on the "Events" menu item.

Today at 12:30 we have a session on RefWorks, the free (at UM) bibliographic system. Tomorrow we have five sessions on using i>clickers to enhance the classroom experience. Additional sessions are listed on the "Events" page.

I hope you will be able to attend some of our sessions.

[ED-TECH] Student Response System session (i>clicker training)

Ed-Tech list members,

Please, please, please, try to attend one of the five training sessions on Friday. They will be taught by a person from i>clicker to demonstrate how to use the i>clicker in your classrooms. This is a real opportunity to learn from an expert. She will be showing how to incorporate the student response units (clickers) into your classes to increase engagement and adapt your teaching to the students. I really hope that you will attend if you can.

[ED-TECH] RefWorks Lunch and Learn - Thursday

Ed-Tech list members ,

[This is my third message today, each on a distinctly different topic. Sorry if I am flooding your mailbox.]

RefWorks: Manage Citations & Create Bibliographies Blindfolded
Thursday, Nov. 20, 12:30 pm - 1:45 pm
Memorial Classroom Building, Room 205

Don't know what RefWorks is? It is a free program that does what EndNote and ProCite do. You can use RefWorks to organize references and information, and then create a perfect bibliography for any writing that you do, using any of the style guides. Unlike EndNote and ProCite, RefWorks is FREE for you and your students at UM, since the library has a site license.

If you have never seen this program, come to lunch on Thursday and take a look. Even if you use something else, you might want to recommend that your students learn about this system. The training on 11/20 is for faculty and staff only. The library offers training for students at other times.

Lunch will be provided. Registration is required. To register, go to http://www.miami.edu/iac and click on the "Events" link. Then locate the "Refworks" session on 11/20. Feel free to sign up for any of the other sessions listed there. I hope to see you at the RefWorks lunch and learn session.

[ED-TECH] Additional Classroom Tech Question

Ed-Tech list members,

I got a number of responses describing how people are using the classroom technology. They were wonderful to read. Thank you to those who wrote, and thanks to all of you who find the equipment useful in enhancing teaching/learning. This is turning out to be a useful activity for me.

Here are a few areas that I haven't heard about yet.

1. Does anyone use the computer to have someone present to the class via video conference? Either the fancy systems provided by IT or the standard system available through iChat or AIM or Skype or such? Either audio only or audio and video?

2. Does anyone use any virtual activities such as archeological digs, museums, or such with their classes? Either IN class or OUT of class?

3. Does anyone use any outside activities such as on-line archeological digs or science events or such with their classes? Either IN class or OUT of class?

4. Who is using clickers (student response systems) successfully in their classes?

5. Anyone recording their lectures as podcasts and putting them on-line for the students?

[ED-TECH] 12:30-1:00 at the University Center Patio

Ed-Tech list members,

If you are free today from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm, I encourage you to come by the University Center patio for the opening ceremonies for Global Entrepreneurship Week. There are a number of fascinating sessions being offered throughout the week that you and your students might enjoy attending.

The opening session features Larry Rosen, http://www.larryrosen.com. On his web site it says,

Mr. Rosen is currently producing a world class jazz series at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, in Miami Florida titled, JAZZ ROOTS. The series, which is debuting in November 2008, will consist of six monthly concerts, and will be accompanied by an in-depth educational program consisting of audio/ visual materials and a curriculum for middle and high school students.

This is an example of the influential people who will be sharing their valuable knowledge with us this week.

Here is the blurb from today's e-Veritas.

Today, Monday, November 17 Global Entrepreneurship Week: Opening Ceremonies. Senior Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education William S. Green and Frost School of Music Dean Shelton "Shelly" Berg open the Global Entrepreneurship Week festivities with entrepreneur, visionary, musician, and producer Larry Rosen, chairman of Larry Rosen Productions, Inc. The event occurs at the University Center Patio from 12:15 to 1 p.m. For more information, call 305-284-2789 or visit www.thelaunchpad.org/news-events.

[ED-TECH] Who is using technology to enhance learning at UM

Ed-Tech list members,

If you are actively using technology at UM in ways that enhance learning and you would like to share your excitement, please let me know. Just tell me, briefly, what you are doing so I can keep track and try to get you some much-deserved recognition for your teaching activities.

This does not require huge systems nor expensive technology. It could be the technology in the General Purpose Classrooms that you have integrated into your class in some exciting way. It could be recording your lectures and making them available to your students. I get asked for examples of High-Tech Learning taking place here. This is usually for a news story or article for the general public, so how high the tech needs to be is relative to the reader, not to the state of the art. I need to create a list, so please let me know if you, or someone you know, should be on it.

A short e-mail will suffice. Please reply now, so I can get started with this project ASAP.

Thanks,
Bill Vilberg

[ED-TECH] Student Response Systems - Clickers in the Classroom

Ed-Tech mailing list members,

If you would like to more fully engage your students, but your classes are too large to have class discussions where everyone can participate ...

If you would like to know whether your students have learned a concept or skill while you are teaching it, so you can adjust your presentation ...

If you would like to know what your students understand from the assigned readings, so you can adjust your teaching ...

... Then come to the DEMONSTRATION/explanation of the student response systems (clickers) that will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 12:30 pm - 1:45 pm, in the Memorial Classroom Building, Room 113. This will be a demonstration of the i>clicker system, the standard adopted by UM and available for student purchase through the campus bookstore.

There will also be a series of training sessions on Friday, November 21, in the beautiful auditorium in the School of Architecture. These will include step by step instructions for obtaining the receivers and using the clickers in class.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. To register, go to http://www.miami.edu/iac and click on the "Events" menu item.

[ED-TECH] New position in Instructional Advancement: Supervisor, Help Desk

If you know of anyone able to manage Instructional Advancement's Help Desk, primarily for Blackboard at this point, please tell them to go to http://www.miami.edu/jobs and search for keyword 037983. They will go straight to this job listing. We are looking for someone to manage the help desk and provide and improve on the high quality support we provide to faculty and students.

We need a service oriented person with excellent communication and organization skills who is excited about the ways that technology can be used to enhance the already high-quality education being provided at UM. This is a new full-time A01 (exempt) position with a starting salary of at least $37,000.

Act quickly. With all the new things that continuously are being added to the Blackboard system, most recently the Grade Center and Respondus Lockdown Browser, we are anxious to fill this position as quickly as possible with a great candidate.

[ED-TECH] i>clickers - Student Response Systems

Ed-Tech mailing list members,

I know classes are almost ready to begin, so this is very late.  The Teaching Learning Technology Roundtable recommended that UM standardize on the i>clicker (http://www.iclicker.com) student response system.  The plan was approved on Friday, so we are developing guides, setting up training, getting the contract signed, and more.

If you are using some other system at this time, there is no need to change.  If you have not thought about using a student response system to collect information from the students during class, please take a look at the i>clicker site and consider what is possible.  Clickers have the potential to increase engagement, improve learning, and provide feedback to the teacher during the lecture.

The cost of the clicker to the students will be $36.75 through the bookstore.  Students will only need one i>clicker for all of the classes they have that use this system.  Stay tuned for more information regarding training and such.

Ed-Tech list members,

A new semester with LOTS of exciting changes.  If you will be teaching in Memorial, the Learning Center, or the Residential College classrooms, I strongly urge you to participate in one of the training sessions listed below.  The equipment isn’t hard to use, but a few minutes spent on a demonstration can be a big help in using the new equipment.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sign up now for training on the classroom technology that will be in ALL the classrooms in Memorial, the Learning Center, and the Residential Colleges.  Sessions will be on Thursday, August 21, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm and Friday, August 29, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm.  Go to http://www.iacmiami.org and click on the “Events” tab to register.

DETAILS

Over the Summer the remaining 41 general purpose classrooms, including Memorial and the Residential College Classrooms, were renovated, featuring some wonderful technology that can be used to enhance teaching.    All the classrooms in the Learning Center, the Memorial Classroom Building, and the various residential colleges now have the same state of the art technology in place.  All classrooms will be equipped with Mac Mini computers that feature a dual boot, whereas you can choose either Mac or PC at startup.

A training session/demonstration of the technology in these rooms will take place Thursday, August 21 from 11:00-12:00, in Memorial 203.  Another session will be held Friday August 29 from 2:30-3:30 in Memorial 312.  This will be an informal showcase of the classroom technology as well as a chance to see and test the equipment fist hand.  To register, please go to http://www.iacmiami.org  and select the Classroom Technology Training session from the Events tab.  I hope you will be able to participate and see these changes that are happening at UM.

[ED-TECH] The most important thing...

"What is the most important thing in education?

Asking questions"

Students asking questions to the teacher and each other.
Teachers and students asking questions of each other and themselves.

I am in San Fracisco at a conference. A speaker just said that, when
designing courses, learning activities, or course web sites, we need
to be "thinking about the learning path, the learning journey." The
focus is on what the students do to learn the material, not when the
instructor will cover what part of the material.

[ED-TECH] End of Year Technique

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Do you have any special technique that you use at the end of a course or the end of a year, here at UM?  If so, please go to http://techniques.iacmiami.org/ and click on the “Add Your Techniques” link to share your technique with other faculty members.

DETAILS:

When I first came to UM 10 years ago, I asked faculty to submit techniques that they were using in their classes that other faculty might want to know about.  I got a number of submissions, and it took me forever to post them on our web site.

I have now hired a student, Brian Beers, to do some Ruby on Rails programming for the IAC.  One of his accomplishments this semester was to create a “UM Teacher Techniques” site.  Hopefully this site can be used to share what works in our classrooms with other faculty, so that they can get ideas that they might try in their courses.  We have moved the original techniques into the site, so there are a few things there already.

The system is now available for your use.  You are welcome to post any techniques that you use.  On occasion I will ask for techniques in a certain area.  Right now I am asking for end-of-class or end-of-year techniquesIs there anything you do at the end of your class that you have found successful?  If so, please go to http://techniques.iacmiami.org/ and click on the “Add Your Techniques” link to share your techniques with other faculty members.

Don’t be shy.  Please share your activities so that others can learn from them.

[ED-TECH] Training: Copyright & Fun Friday

This Friday, at 11:30 AM, in Memorial 203, Scott Britton, from the Richter Library, will be presenting “Copyrights: What’s Fair?”  It is important that everyone knows as much about this subject as possible.  I wouldn’t want anyone to put themselves at risk because they were not aware that they could or should not do something one way or another.  If you have the time, please attend this session and learn more about copyrights.

Lunch will be served.  To register, go to http://iac.miami.edu

[ED-TECH] Wikis, Blogs, and More

Friday at 11:30 AM Jennifer Clister is doing a very gentle introduction to the differences between and various uses for wikis, blogs, and discussion boards.  Don’t know a wiki from a blog?  Here is your chance to learn about them and how they might be used.

Since many faculty redesign their courses over the summer, I encourage you to take advantage of this session in order to consider the use of these systems in your classes.  To sign up, go to http://iac.miami.edu. Lunch will be provided.

In addition, there is an article “Wikis, Blogs, & More, Oh My!” in this month’s Campus Technology magazine.  I placed the article at the http://www.miami.edu/bb/wikisblogs.pdf address.  You can find the entire magazine at http://campustechnology.com/mcv/inprint/currentissue/.  You might enjoy reading this before the session, or if you are unable to attend the session.

[ED-TECH] DST: Digital Story Telling

Ed-Tech list members,

Much of what our students do can be viewed as story telling. (I am talking about the learning process, not just creating excuses.) One of the things UM will be working on in the coming years is finding ways for students to use “New Media” to demonstrate their learning. Digital story telling is one of those ways. Instead of having them write a paper, have them create a digital story.

Because most of us are not trained in this area, we will be looking for material and providing learning opportunities. I just came across an excellent article that points out some of the main things to consider with digital story telling. It can be found at on the http://www.TechLearning.com site or by going directly to the http://tinyurl.com/yv5sk4 site.

You might find this valuable for your own use as you develop material that you use in class. This is primarily a K-12 site, but much of the material applies to what we do in higher education, as well.

[ED-TECH] New Lunch and Learn sessions

Ed-Tech list members,

Three new Lunch and Learn sessions are open for registration. I know it is the end of the semester, and everyone is VERY busy helping our students successfully complete the year. If you think any of these topics would be of use/interest to you, I hope that you will be able to find time to join us for our Lunch and Learn sessions. Registration is required and can be completed quickly on-line at the http://iac.miami.edu web site. If you have food preferences (we get the lunch from Subways) please include the information in the Comments section of the form.

Wikis, Blogs, and Discussion Boards: When to Use What – (Friday, April 4, 11:30 AM, Memorial 203)

These are three different forms of writing, supported by the Blackboard system. What are the differences? Why/when would you use one instead of another. If you haven’t seen the wiki and blog capabilities of Blackboard, this will be a very gentle introduction to what they can do for you as you design learning activities for your students.

Moodle: An Alternative to Blackboard? – (Friday, April 11, 11:30 AM, Memorial 203)

Moodle is a learning management system, like Blackboard. It was designed by a teacher, so it has some features not found in Blackboard. It is being adopted by some major schools, such as UCLA and LSU. And it costs far less than Blackboard. Come see a brief demonstration of Moodle, as the first step in an evaluation of a possible change.

Copyrights: What’s Fair? – (Friday, April 18, 11:30 AM, Memorial 203)

Scott Britton has been attending workshops on Copyright law. Come here him tell what he has learned about what we can and cannot (should not?) do as teachers. The laws are changing, so even if you have learned about copyright before, I encourage you to attend this session and find out what is new.

[ED-TECH] Conference Report: The Redesign Alliance

Ed-Tech Mailing List Members,

I am attending a conference on course redesign. Course redesign is being advocated and supported by The National Center for Academic Transformation (http://www.thencat.org). At this point lots of schools have gone through the redesign process. The data supports the use of the process in order to improve student learning and reduce costs. Large enrollment (for the institution) general education (core) undergraduate courses are the focus.

The most common reason to redesign a course is to reduce the percentage of drops, failures, or withdrawals (DFW). So the first step is to gather the statistics for the various general education courses at the institution. (Actually the first step is really to get IRB approval, but that should be no problem since no individual students will be identified.) If there are other goals, they would also be identified and measured. The statistics, along with course enrollment numbers, should indicate which course would most benefit from a redesign.

Then the various players become involved. This includes the department faculty members, administration, support people, other departments if the course is tied in to some other program, and anyone else that needs to buy-in to this effort.

After working with so many redesigns, NCAT has identified five regularly seen redesign models: supplemental, replacement, emporium, fully online, and buffet. These are described in “Improving Learning and Reducing Costs: New Models for Online Learning,” available at http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0352.pdf as published in the Educause Review in 2003. To some extent the redesign process consists of choosing one of these models and applying it, given the uniqueness of each institution.

If you are interested in learning about this process, a recommended reading list is available at http://www.thencat.org/Rec_Reading.htm and the readings are not very long.

This morning I attended a two hour session for administrators, with the Provost of Georgia State University and the Interim Vice President for Instruction and Dean of University College, University of Arizona. They talked about the institutional issues and activities. They were both extremely positive about the improvements that they are seeing in learning through this process.

This afternoon I attended a session on Redesigning Math in the University with some very powerful statistics regarding improved DFW numbers at some schools such as Alabama and LSU. Then I attended “The Mathematics Success Project” session, where information was collected from public university systems, rather than individual schools. My bias towards mathematics is based solely on the fact that my graduate work was in mathematics education, and I have taught college statistics.

Tomorrow I will be attending a session on how to get started with course redesign and a session on developing a valid assessment plan.

Next steps?

1. Have UM join The National Center for Academic Transformation.

2. Collect DFW statistics for some of the large enrollment general education courses at UM.

3. Bring Carol Twigg, President of NCAT, or someone else with experience in course redesign, to UM to speak with Deans, Chairs, and faculty members.

4. Based on identified goals, choose a course to redesign.

5. Begin the discussion about the course’s learning issues, teaching issues, alternative models, and experience of other schools.

6. Submit an application for the Colleagues Committed to Redesign (C2R) program, sponsored by FIPSE and run by NCAT. Application must be submitted by January 15, 2009.

7. If accepted, participate in planning events during spring and summer 2009.

8. Implement the redesign pilot in Fall 2009.

9. Evaluate and repeat as needed.

What do you think? Is this something that UM should do? Would you be interested in participating? What could you do to facilitate the process?

[ED-TECH] Drop.io: Simple Private Exchange of Files and More

Ed-Tech list members,

I am in Orlando, at the Redesign Alliance Conference. While driving up today I listened to a number of podcasts. One of them mentioned drop.io. (The “i” is pronounced as a long “e”.) I think this is one of the neatest file sharing system I have seen. It could be really useful for creative writing or composition classes, where you want everyone to read each others papers. Have them upload them to a drop.io site, and everyone can have access to them.

Rather than write all the details here, let me refer you to my wrvTips blog entry at http://tinyurl.com/2cu78k. I even created a sample site that you can play with.

This also might be of interest to people who want to share files for other reasons. For example, pictures of a wedding or a new baby, a research paper that you are collaborating on, or documents for a committee to work on together. I am really impressed with this implementation. It might be worth your time to read my blog entry.

[ED-TECH] Fun Friday - A Technology Event

Ed-Tech List Members,

Those of us who work with technology are starting a new event. Once a month we will have a “Fun Friday” presentation, with a hardware item, a software program, and a web service. The first Fun Friday will be February 29th, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, in Memorial 203.

I will be presenting all three of the sections at the first session. The hardware item will be a $130 high definition digital video camera that I have been using. The software program will be Process Explorer from SysInternals. And the web service will be Qipit.com, which allows you to e-mail pictures of your white board. for example, and they will create a PDF version for e-mail distribution or posting on the Web (in Blackboard?).

If you are interested in technology, and would like to mingle with those of us who support technology here at UM, feel free to participate in this Fun Friday event.

Lunch will be served. Registration is required. Go to http://iac.miami.edu/ to register.

[ED-TECH] New Classrooms

Ed-Tech list members,

Last year 25 general purpose classrooms were renovated, including some wonderful technology that can be used to enhance teaching. This summer the remaining 41 general purpose classrooms will be renovated with the same capabilities. All the classrooms in the Learning Center, the Memorial Classroom Building, and the various residential colleges will have this same technology by the beginning of this coming Fall. This is an exciting time.

A training session/demonstration of the technology in these rooms will take place Friday, Feb 22, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, in Memorial 203. You might want to see some of the capabilities of these rooms now, if you will be using one in the fall. It might affect how you plan your classes for the fall.

To register, please go to http://iac.miami.edu and select the Classroom Technology Training session. I hope you will be able to participate and see these changes that are happening at UM.

[ED-TECH] SMART Notebook software demonstration

Ed-Tech List Members,

I will be demonstrating the SMART Notebook software on Friday, Feb 7, 2008, 11:30 am – 12:20 pm, in Memorial 203. Registration is now open and limited to 30 people. Lunch will be served. Go to http://129.171.43.14 to register.

SMART Notebook lets you capture what you do on the SMART Sympodium writing tablets in the new classrooms in the Learning Center and Memorial Classroom Building. With this software it is easy to capture all of your notes, scroll back and forth through them, and save them at the end of class. The notes can be uploaded to Blackboard so that students will have an exact copy of what you wrote during class. The notes can use many colors and there is no worry about your marker running dry. You can prepare material in advance, and add to it during class, or just start with a blank page and use it just like a white board.

Interested? Come by next Friday and see this in action. It is very easy to use, and will be added to all the remaining classrooms in the Memorial Classroom Building, and the classrooms in the Residential Colleges this summer.

[ED-TECH] Blythe Nobleman demonstration of student work from her classes

Ed-Tech List Members,

If you are available at 12:30 PM next Thursday, I strongly encourage you to sign up for Blythe Nobleman’s demonstration of what she is doing with her students. (Go to http://129.171.43.14 and click on the “Composing with Blackboard Course Tools” event to register.) Blythe teaches composition, but realizes that composing is different in different media. She uses all kinds of features in Blackboard to give her students experience in composition beyond typed essays and research papers. She uses tools including wikis, blogs, surveys, podcasts, and more.

The University is embarking on a project to enhance teaching by developing course assignments using new media. Interested faculty will be trained on using media other than written papers for student learning. Writing is not being eliminated, but other forms of communication can be encouraged and included in course assignments. To see the complete plan, you can go to http://www.miami.edu/sacs, click on the “UM’s QEP” link, and then click on the “Communication across the Curriculum: Enhancing student learning by extending the scope of information acquisition and communication of knowledge in the undergraduate experience” link. Many people are already using these techniques in their classes. Blythe is a wonderful example of this.

I am excited whenever a faculty member can share their classroom ideas with other faculty. I hope you will be able to attend this session on Thursday, February 7, 2008, 12:30-1:45 PM, in the University Center, Flamingo Ballroom (Room 226), Sections C & D. Be sure to bring something to stay warm, since that room is VERY cold most of the time.

Lunch will be served. Registration is required. Go to http://129.171.43.14 to register.

[ED-TECH] Teaching Workshop - Thursday @ 3:30 pm

Ed-Tech list members,

The participants at the workshop on Thursday will be working on issues related to student use of computers in the classroom. How can it increase learning? How can it decrease learning? How should we respond to this new capability?

Some instructors order students to turn off all computers during class. Some require that students using computers in class can only use them to take notes, and must sit in the front row of the classroom. Some are ignoring the issue, assuming it is no different from doodling or thinking. Some are beginning to change their classroom activities to take advantage of the computers.

The goal of the workshop will be to look at these alternatives, as a group. The workshop participants will generate new ways of integrating and/or controlling computers in the classroom. Registration is limited and required. To register, go to http://129.171.43.14/ and select the “Teacer vs. Technology” session.

[ED-TECH] FETC 2008 - Day 2

Ed-Tech list members,

Here is my report from Friday at the Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC) in Orlando.

LuLu (http://www.lulu.com) – LuLu prints books on demand. What is the difference between LuLu.com and a vanity press? LuLu requires no upfront cost, unless you want an ISBN number. An ISBN number costs $98, I believe. LuLu was at FETC trying to get K-8 teachers to have their students create a book and then actually get a bound copy of the book. I am wondering about using LuLu for a yearly volume of essays by Excellence in Teaching award winners.

Astaro (http://www.astaro.com) makes a Security Gateway Appliance. You can buy the hardware device or download the software and use a PC. It does e-mail filtering, VPN encryption, anti-virus protection, intrusion protection, and more. I hear about this product every week when I listen to the Security Now podcast. It was interesting to see it.

Software Express (http://swextress.com) has another security cart. If you have more than 12 computers in a single cart, you need to use a timer to recharge the computers so that you don’t overload the outlet that the cart plugs-into. I hadn’t realized that.

Interwrite Learning (http://www.interwritelearning.com) makes the Interwrite PRS student response system that a number of people at UM are currently using. They also make a Bluetooth wireless pad, so you can work on the computer as you walk around the classroom. We need to get a couple of these pads and have some faculty try them out in class. It looks like it would be a nice addition, but you can’t really tell until you try to use it as your teach.

Maplesoft (http://www.maplesoft.com) “lets you explore, visualize, and solve even the most complex mathematical problems.” It used to be almost exclusively a symbolic solver. They have added many additional features that make it easier to use and show visual results. UM has a site license, so it is either free or very inexpensive to put this on UM owned computers. Contact Beth at 284-1138 for more information.

Remote-Learner (http://remote-Learner.net) is another Moodle hosting and/or support company. Their model is slightly different than Moodlerooms. Moodlerooms charges $1/student/year. Remote-Learner has different levels of support. Their highest level costs $20,000 per year. They will also sell and manage a Moodle Appliance Server so the learning management system (LMS) can be run here, with their assistance. I continue to be intrigued with Moodle as a possible alternative to Blackboard, at some point in the future.

Angel Learning (http://www.angellearning.com) licenses the Angel learning management system. I believe that it is in use at UM in Continuing Studies and on the Medical campus. Like Blackboard it is a commercial product. Like Moodle you can have direct access to the database, so you can add on functionality easily.

EarthWalk (http://www.EarthWalk.com) is one more maker of carts to hold a lab set of portable computers. In addition to the normal steel carts, they have a chest that holds the computers in foam rubber so they can be moved between locations and even transported in a car.

SoftChalk (http://www.softchalk.com), maker of LessonBuilder, is currently offering their $99 on-line training sessions for FREE. This is for a limited time. Click on the Training button on their home page to review and register for the individual sessions. We have a site license for SoftChalk LessonBuilder at UM, so you can download it from the http://www.miami.edu/software web site. SoftChalk also has a new version coming out that increases the instructor’s ability to customize the look of the material, and adds lots of new features. It will be placed on the download page after it is released. This is, in my opinion, a very nice way to create computer based learning materials. I apologize for not being able to promote it as much as it deserves. If you have any interest in developing some web materials to help your students learn, I urge you to take a look at this product.

[ED-TECH] FETC 2008 - Day 1

Ed-Tech list members,

I am at the Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC) in Orlando. This is a K-12 conference, so I don’t attend the sessions, but the exhibit hall is filled with products that cross over to higher education. That is where I spend my time. Here is a report of what I found and thought about today.

Moodlerooms (http://www.moodlerooms.com) – Moodle (http://moodle.org) is an open-source (free) learning management system (LMS). Blackboard is a commercial LMS. Moodle is designed by an educator, so it has some really nice features. Since it is extensible (you can add things on to it) there is little that you cannot do with it. But some people are worried about moving to it, since they would not have any support. Moodlerooms provides that support and hosts the LMS on their machines, for $1 per student per year. They have a number of institutions that have moved from Blackboard to Moodle with their help. One example is LSU. The LMS cost at UM would drop from $300,000 per year to $30,000 per year. Of course there are lots of issues in changing platforms, particularly the effect on faculty who will have to learn a new system and move materials to it. I continue to be intrigued by Moodle, and moodlerooms solves one of the impediments to adopting it.

SMART Technologies makes the Sympodium writing tablets that we installed in the new classrooms. They have a new model out. It is the same size as our current tablets, but they are not touch sensitive. Our current tablets are supposed to use the pen when it is removed from its tray, and be touch sensitive when the pen is in the tray. The new model only uses the pen. That loses a capability but simplifies the system. If our tablets don’t work correctly, they are always touch sensitive. That means that they sense your hand when you write with the pen, or they read the wire attached to the pen if it brushes against the screen. So maybe we would be better off with the pen only versions. I need to ask people whether they use the touch screen with their fingers.

SMART Technologies also makes a personal response system (PRS) called Senteo. (These are often referred to as clickers.) UM currently has at least three versions of clickers in use: Interwrite PRS (http://www.interwritelearning.com/), iClicker (http://www.iclicker.com/), and Turning Point (http://www.turningtechnologies.com/). UM will be standardizing on one system, either one of these or some other, to place in the general purpose classrooms and to support with training and assistance. SMART’s Senteo has some limitations, the primary one being that it only works from within the SMART Notebook software. It is interesting to look at all the alternatives and analyzing their differences.

Intel, the chip maker, has material at http://www.intel.com/education for teacher training, engineering students, and more. All free.

Computrace LoJack for Laptops (http://www.lojackforlaptops.com/) by Absolute (http://www.absolute.com/) had a booth, promoting their system to return or erase lost/stolen notebook computers. UM has some software to encrypt the hard disk on a portable that everyone can get for free. LoJack costs about $50/year or $100 for three years, but provides a different capability.

nComputing (http://www.ncomputing.com) is a small company that makes an interesting device to reduce the cost of computers in a lab or classroom. Rather than buying 4 individual computers, you buy one tower computer, a bit more powerful than you might have normally purchased. Then you buy three more monitors, keyboards, and mice, and attach each set to an nComputing box. The reduction in computer costs and maintenance time is significant. A number of schools in Florida are moving to this solution in their labs, according to the people at the booth. It would be interesting to have someone at UM test this solution. They will provide free equipment to try it out.

Interlink makes a number of different remote control presentation controllers (http://www.smklink.com/index.php?id=Mzky). In supporting the renovated classrooms, we know that faculty want the ability to walk around the room and control the computer. We went with the Gyration air mouse (http://www.gyration.com/). There are alternatives, such as the Interlink, that we should probably review at UM.

Polycom (http://www.polycom.com) had a booth and I talked with them about the use of video conferencing to bring guests into a classroom or to allow students in other location to watch and listen to the class. UM has a lot of Polycom equipment, but access for faculty could be better, in my opinion.

StoreVault (http://www.storevault.com) makes a networked backup system that is interesting. I need the capability to back up all of our computers in the IAC so that we can completely restore any computer onto a new hard drive, should the original hard drive fail. This includes the data, the applications, and the operating system. I use Acronis True Image Home to back up my computer to an external hard drive. I can’t afford to take a week to reconfigure my computer after a major problem, I need to get everything running almost immediately, and I would expect that all faculty members need that same capability. Anyway, I will be looking carefully at the StoreVault solutions to see if they meet our needs in the IAC.

MozyPro (http://www.mozy.com/) is an on-line backup service. I am going to also look into this backup solution, since it provides the safety of physically separating the original media and backup media. If you backup to a hard drive that is next to your computer, and someone steals everything, you didn’t really have a backup. Ask Francis Ford Coppola (http://tinyurl.com/2w4ep6). In researching this tonight, I came across ADrive (http://www.adrive.com/) which offers 50GB of free on-line storage. For many people that would be MORE than enough to store their pictures, music files, and probably their complete My Documents folder. Note that there may be problems putting UM files on an on-line storage system like these.

Wimba (http://www.winba.com/) makes of the voice tools add-on to Blackboard that we have at UM. This is heavily used in our modern language courses. We have been working on getting a license signed since last summer. It looks like the final session to work out the details will be tomorrow.

Learning Objects (http://www.learningobjects.com/) makes the blog, wiki, and podcast tools that we have added to Blackboard at UM. It is always a pleasure to talk with them about the many capabilities they add to Blackboard. They recently added some features to their web sites, including a knowledgebase and use cases. The use cases (http://www.learningobjects.com/usageguide.jsp) can help faculty think about how the blog and wiki tools might be incorporated in their courses.

Centurion Technologies (http://www.centuriontech.com/) makes the Cornerstone product that we have installed in all the new classroom computers. This software allows anything to be done to the computer, but instantly restores it to the original condition on a reboot. It also has a control center that allows us to unprotect the computers early each morning so that Symantec Anti-Virus and Microsoft Updates can be processed, with no intervention on our part. I met one of the support people that has been of great help to us as we got things configured this year. By the way, UM has a license for 1,000 copies of the Cornerstone product. They can be obtained from IT on request. If there are public computers that sometimes get messed up and need to be maintained, I strongly endorse this solution.

I covered eight of the fifteen aisles today. Back tomorrow for the remaining seven.
