What do you do the first day of class? I would guess most faculty start by going over the syllabus, including course content and rules. That ignores the social aspects of a class, doesn't it? How about something that gives the students a brief look at the other students in the class or, if a large class, at least a few of them? The link below has to some interesting "ice-breakers" that you might try this semester. If you do, let me know how they work out. It might change the dynamics of the entire semester.
