[ED-TECH] Learning to Learn for first year university students
L. Dee Fink lists Learning to Learn as one of the "Significant Learning" goals that could be part of every course.
If you teach first year students, you might want to distribute this document early in your class: http://www.smu.edu/Provost/ALEC/NeatStuffforNewStudents/HowIsCollegeDifferentfromHighSchool
Your students have had 12 years of successful educational experiences. This document can help them understand the difference between high school, where they probably excelled, and University, which requires different skills.

[ED-TECH] Making passwords useful
Here is a nice article on reframing password resets as an opportunity to improve your life, rather than a painful requirement being demanded if you.

[ED-TECH] Yammer webinar/demo TODAY (6/11/2014) 3:30 pm
Want to know more about Yammer, the company wide communication and collaboration system, here at UM? Today (Wednesday, June 11, 2014) I will be talking about and demonstrating Yammer during our Virtual Office Hours webinar. There will be basic information as well as some tips that can make Yammer more useful.
Virtual Office Hours is a live webinar, presented by the Learning Platforms team at UM, every Wednesday, 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm, using Blackboard Collaborate. Go to http://tinyurl.com/umiamibb and follow the instructions. It can take some time to get everything set up so either do it once sometime before hand, or get started around 3:00 or so. If you have trouble, call the Blackboard Help Desk at 305-284-3949.
The other topic for today will be "Creating Blackboard Learn Grade Center Columns" by Brett Stephens.
Remember, you can participate from anywhere. You will need to be able to hear us, but the microphone and web cam is completely optional. We use them, you can if you wish.

[ED-TECH] Teaching Online for Beginners, May 11 - June 27
The Teaching, Learning, Technology Group will be running an online course/experience (FREE!) for people who are thinking of teaching online, or moving some of their course experience online. These are not people with "the answers" but, rather, people who are investigating the subject. I have enjoyed working with the leaders since 1994, so I am hoping this will be another valuable experience. The event begins on May 11 and runs through June 27. Since it is all online, and participants are not locked into the exact schedule, it can fit into almost anyone's summer schedule. A wonderful "Professional Development" opportunity related to teaching.
Watch the video at http://youtu.be/npnsylFUTjY for an introduction. Go to http://tltgroup.roundtablelive.org/events?eventId=841363&EventViewMode=EventDetails for more details, the schedule, and a button to register (FREE!) for this event.
I will be signing up for the series. I hope to see many of you online.

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT SENT TO ALL FACULTY
----- BEGIN INSERT ------
The University of Miami is developing new on-line courses and degrees that will be offered this year. What do on-line courses look like? What is it like to teach on-line? What does it take to develop an on-line course?
The Provost's Office invites all University of Miami faculty to an On-Line Education Open House. At this session, Laureate Education, Inc. will demonstrate the design and features of some of the online courses that they have developed. This should answer many of your questions and give you a preview of what University of Miami on-line courses could look like. Laureate representatives will discuss:
- Various on-line classroom styles, approaches to content, organizations, and features
- Various types of media that can be used in on-line classrooms such as videos, simulations, and interactive media
- Course activities that challenge and engage online students
- Current technologies for Student Identity Verification, industry standards and what Laureate is investigating and piloting in this area
The open-house sessions will run three times on April 16th to maximize the number of people who can attend. Space is limited, so if you plan to attend, please register.
When Wednesday April 16, 2014 from 9:30am to 11:00am, 11:30am to 1:00pm, and 2:30pm to 4:00pm (Each session will be a repeat of the same presentation)

[ED-TECH] Blackboard Collaborate for use outside of Blackboard Learn
Blackboard Collaborate has been available inside of Blackboard Learn for a while. Now it will be available outside of Blackboard Learn as a full webinar and web conferencing system. Blackboard Collaborate supports video, audio, presentations, and screen sharing. People do not have to be part of UM in order to be a participant or a moderator of a session.
If you are interested in using the Blackboard Collaborate system, please attend the exciting announcement on April 1st. For more information about this event, or special accomodations, please contact Rick Ramos at either 305-284-3949 or r.ramos3@miami.edu .

Re: [ED-TECH] Ed-Tech is moving to a Yammer group
Hi Bill
I would love to join the Learning Design group but I have a umiami account and not a miami.edu account. Do you know how I can be added to the Miami group instead of the umiami?

Subject: [ED-TECH] Ed-Tech is moving to a Yammer group
I am shutting down the Ed-Tech mailing list and moving to a Yammer group. If you have an @miami.edu email address, please join the Yammer group if you want to continue to get and discuss educational technology information. You can continue to receive messages via email, if you so choose. (If you are not part of the UM email system, you will not be able to join this group.)
To join the Yammer group, please follow these simple steps.
GETTING STARTED
1. Go to Yammer.com and create an account, using your @miami.edu (or @bus.miami.edu) email address.
2. Once you have created the account and logged in, join the "ed-tech (public)" group. (Details below, if you can't see how to do it immediately.)
3. If you want to follow the group via email, so you don't have to login to Yammer to see if there is anything new, enter the group and click on the "Subscribe to this group by email" check box in the right hand column.
I don't remember exactly what happens when you create a new account. I think you get to join groups automatically. If not, you should be able to join the ed-tech group by following these steps.
JOIN THE ED-TECH GROUP
1. Click on the "Groups" link in the menu bar on the left of the Yammer page.
2. If the group does not appear in the list of "Groups that may interest you," click on the "View more groups" link at the bottom of the selection box.
3. Click on the "All Groups" tab on the next page that appears.
4. Find the "ed-tech (public)" group and click on the "+ Join" button to the right of the name.
The ed-tech group is public, so anyone with a Yammer account in our network (@miami.edu) can join it. Many of the groups listed a private groups. They have a padlock after their names and, if you click on the "+ Join" button a request will be sent to the administrator of the group for approval.
You are able to join any of the public (no padlock) groups. I recommend the "Learning Design" group if you are interested in improving your teaching or designing on-line materials for your students.

[ED-TECH] Join Yammer "Learning Design Community," not "ed-tech (open)"
If join the ed-tech group, I will move you to the Learning Design Community group and then remove you from the ed-tech group. I have admin rights to both.
If you have not yet joined the ed-tech group, please join the Learning Design Community group instead.
